How to prevent joint problems
by Veli-Jussi Jalkanen
The important principle “use it or lose it” also applies to joint health.
Joints need regular and moderate exercise because only that effectively “lubricates” the joints, activates cell renewal, and strengthens muscles around the joints. We also need exercise and stretching that maintains the wide movement range of the joints.
Back problems are mainly due to sitting with the back rounded. In this position the fluid circulation of the back (especially in the lower back) decreases due to the muscle tension and immobility caused by bad posture. Thus, waste removal and nutrient intake of the back tissue will not work properly and all tissues will begin to degenerate.
When to process continues chronic pains will follow. The situation of the lower back is further aggravated by the fact that there are no so-called joint vertebrae around the lowest vertebra. So the L4-L5 area often gets too little oxygen and nutrients, and the situation is further worsened by sitting in a slouched position.
An effective counteraction is a two-part swinging saddle chair and loose clothes (optimally not even underwear) and a desk that can be quickly adjusted. Swinging of the hips that the chair enables, and any other possible exercise (ascending stairs, having negotiations and making phone calls while walking), is beneficial. Standing is a good variation but it also has its own side effects. Standing for approximately 5-15 minutes, max. 30% of the work time, is still good for the joint health. A one-part saddle chair does not enable a good posture and comfortable sitting because of the pressure on the genital area, and it also is a health risk.
Joint health can be improved by certain nutritional supplements. These include, e.g., collagen of bone broth, omega3 fatty acids (from fish or supplements), baking soda, turmeric, ginger, MSM, glucosamine, ashwagandha herb (especially with ginger and turmeric), chondroitin sulfate, and shark cartilage and mussel concentrates.
These substances can be obtained from various special dishes and supplements. The combination of several substances is more efficient.
