Back pain is today the most common cause of sick leaves in the world. Over 540 million people are expected to suffer from lumbar spine problems. Björn Rydevik, professor of orthopedics at the Swedish University of Gothenburg and orthopedic surgeon at the Sahlgrenska Academy, describes the situation as a global epidemic.

The reasons are, of course, many and varied, but in the western world our increasingly sedentary lifestyle is certainly a strong contributing factor. When sitting in old-fashioned chairs there is a 90 degree angle in the hip that causes incorrect load on the spine and disks. The disks are pushed together at the front and the muscles of the back are constantly stretched. This causes poor circulation, weakens the muscles and increases the risk of lumbago and ruptured disk.

An international study, published in the Lancet in March, now shows that millions of people get bad care for their ailments. Many are treated with methods that have no scientifically proven effect, or are told to rest. What they really need is exercise that improves the stability and mobility of the back. Prevention and early rehabilitation are key points in this.

    Back feels better but my office desk is too low so use it intermittently

    Thanks for the review Joy. Sitting height is very important, as is your desk height. A height adjustable desk is preferable, but you can always raise your existing desk height with stack-its, bricks etc , or a desk converter to sit on top of the desk.

    This will make a big difference and allow you to use you Salli chair more effectively.
